Recombinant Human Thrombopoietin (rh-TPO)
Chemotherapy regimens may cause you to develop low levels of platelets in your blood stream that require platelet transfusions in order to maintain your platelet level. Low platelet counts are a common side effect of some cancer treatments. Platelets are important in helping the blood clot. If platelet counts are too low there is an increased need for platelet transfusions to prevent bleeding.

Thrombopoietin is a protein found in the body that stimulates the bone marrow to produce platelets and help in their development. A version of the human thrombopoietin made in the laboratory known as rh-TPO has now been developed and is being used in this research study.

The purpose of this study is to test the effectiveness and safety of rh-TPO given by intravenous injection to prevent the reduction of the circulating blood platelets caused by the chemotherapy treatment.
