Dr. Hanson
John P. Hanson, Jr., M. D.

Dr. HansonDr. Hanson graduated cum laude in pre-medical sciences from the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. and received his medical degree from Marquette University Medical School (now the Medical College of Wisconsin) In Milwaukee. Dr. Hanson completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago.

He went on to receive post graduate training in hematology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, and completed a second post graduate fellowship in medical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In 1974, Dr. Hanson established a practice in medical oncology and hematology in Milwaukee as a founding partner of Medical Consultants, Ltd.

While practicing in Milwaukee, Dr. Hanson introduced cooperative clinical chemotherapy trials at St. Luke's Medical Center. He was also the first person to do Phase I clinical trials at St. Luke's and the first to bring here (interlukin-2) for immunotherapy requiring an investigational new drug.

In addition to his practice, Dr. Hanson is medical director of the Immunotherapy Research & Treatment Institute at St. Luke's, which both applies immunotherapy in the care of patients with cancer and investigates ways to enhance this approach to treating cancer through laboratory research. In addition to St. Luke's Medical Center, Dr. Hanson is also on the medical staff at West Allis Memorial, Sinai-Samaritan, St. Francis and Hartford Memorial. He is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Dr. Hanson is also an assistant professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and at the Mount Sinai Medical Center School of Medicine in New York. He has also been named as one of the top Medical Oncologists in the Milwaukee area in a survey of the medical community conducted by Milwaukee Magazine.
